All the girls are doing it, so why can't the boys? If 2010 was the year of the item babe — with Munni and Sheila being the talk of B-town — then this year, the item boys are taking over in their leather pants, fake moustaches and wigs. 

Aamir Khan: An item number was the only thing missing from perfectionist Aamir Khan's CV. In his latest home production, Aamir didn't just shake a leg, '70s style, in the song I Hate You, Like I Love You — he also spoofed the actors of the '70s disco era. From the swagger of Rishi Kapoor, Big B's mane, Govinda's bawdy dance moves, to Anil Kapoor's hairy chest, he borrowed elements from popular yesteryear stars.
Ranbir Kapoor: Tai Tai Phiss — the item song in an upcoming kiddie flick — features RK Jr in his first item number. He has sported his father Rishi Kapoor's look from his film Amar Akbar Anthony. Shaking a leg maawali style, Bollywood's newest twinkle toes (after Hrithik Roshan) is game for anything.

Amitabh Bachchan: For a long time, the younger generation has ripped off his songs and dance moves. Now the real 68-year-old angry man is doing the cool dude act in his film, riding the original thumper, and dancing with firangs in barely-there clothes in the song. And he proves that he is the grand daddy of them all when he shakes a leg in a medley of all his old songs. The medley Go Meera combines the evergreen chartbusters — Rang Barse, Khaike Paan Banaraswala, Pag Ghungroo and the disco song Sara Zamana.

Salman Khan: Aamir Khan has hailed him as Bollywood's original item boy. The bad boy of Bollywood, who has given three back-to-back releases, is the hottest item boy in town. While the belt antic in Dabangg with the trademark glasses won him a lot of applause, the Dhinka Chika number in his latest film is apparently the most downloaded song on Internet.

Shah Rukh Khan: Though King Khan has many item numbers to his credit, he hasn't been seen on screen for a long time. SRK, who amazed his fans with his six-pack in the song Dard-E-Disco, will flaunt his body again in his forthcoming film Ra.One, borrowing steps from Bharatanatyam. The superstar also turned an item boy for his home production Always Kabhi Kabhi. 

Celebs criticize Ram Gopal Varma

Not many dare to abuse Amitabh Bachchan, not even as a 'compliment'. But Ram Gopal Varma, as unpredictable as his films, seems to have run out of good adjectives even while praising people! 

After watching Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap, the director abused Big B on a micro-blogging site for not doing similar films more often, later clarifying that he was complimenting him. His post read, "Just watched Bbuddah nd am angry with Bachchan that he's such a c****** not to do films like this and am such a **** not to realise this." Later, he even justified the abuses by saying this was the correct language in India "in times of D K Bose".

If someone uses abuses for the sake of sensationalism, it's unacceptable. Using such language on a public forum won't make you popular and I think it was something unnecessary.

We think Saif Ali Khan is all kinds of fed up of being called stylish/ dapper/ debonair and other such admirable adjectives. 

There's no other explanation for why he's borrowed girlfriend Kareena Kapoor's track pants, tied a dandy bow with the drawstrings and tucked in his tee to boot. Oh our eyes... it's just too much to see such a pretty man looking so pansy!

Aamir Khan, Raj Thackeray watch Delhi Belly together

If it's about Delhi, it's bound to attract politicos. 

And so, when we saw Raj Thackeray walk in withAamir Khan to Ketnav, a theatre where the star screened his latest production Delhi Belly, last night, it did not surprise us much. However, it did catch our eye. 

"Raj found that many of his friends wanted to watch the film too. Hence he requested for a special screening. Aamir was too happy to oblige!" informed a source. "The actor however did not sit for the entire screening himself and decided to let Raj enjoy with his family and friends. They were cheering and clapping throughout the film!" added the source. 

This is not the first time Aamir has organised screenings for Raj Thackray. He had earlier organised special screenings for his film Dhobi Ghat and Peepli Live for the politician. 

And while the producer was busy organising shows for his friends, the three lead actors, Imran Khan, Vir Das and Kunaal Roy Kapoor were busy trying to 'pencher' their rivals at the box office in their unique way. 

At a party, the lead trio sat down to sing a song from their film. And Vir Das tweeted the picture on Saturday tagging it 'Pencher, pencher, pencher'. Well, they did manage to do that with a superb opening.

Lara Dutta eyes television!

After launching her health and fitness DVDs, Lara Dutta has her eyes set on the small screen. The actress is very close to negotiating a deal with a leading channel to host a reality show. 

While offers have been pouring in from all quarters, she is being extremely choosy about the kind of work she wants to do. Since the producers worked out her schedule in a way that it won't take a toll on her films, Lara was more than happy to take it on. She has also been discussing the project with her husband Mahesh and asking him for tips.

No sky-diving for Katrina

While Katrina Kaif has tried everything from dirt-biking to scuba diving, she says she wouldn't have gone sky-diving. 

The sexiest woman in the world has done it all from dirt-biking to scuba diving. In her forthcoming filmZindagi Na Milegi Dobara , Katrina Kaif has indulged in outdoor sports of the extreme kind. "I had tried riding lighter bikes earlier. But the bikes in this film were bigger and heavier. I had to undergo training to ride such bikes", says Katrina. "Scuba diving was more difficult. The water in the sea would suddenly become rough and choppy and that is when I realized that probably I hadn't been trained enough for it". 

Meanwhile what happens to her plans of going biking in the city of Mumbai? "I do want to ride a bike but, on second thoughts, riding it in the city would not be much fun because people will start following me", says the actress. "So I first need to figure out some calm place where I can ride a bike without garnering much attention". 

Ask her if she missed trying her hands at sky-diving that the boys attempt in the film and she reverts in negation. "I consider myself very lucky and privileged that I didn't have to go sky-diving. I don't know if I would have done something like that", confesses Katrina.

Weight gain is Sonakshi Sinha's loss

While there are reports that Sonakshi Sinhawalked out of Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopambecause the makers took too long to start the project, South producers are speaking in hushed whispers about how Sonakshi was actually asked to leave the project because she couldn't lose enough weight for the role .

The character has to take part in a lot of action scenes and hence is required to have a lean physique. The curvy actress has weight problems and tends to pile on kilos if she doesn't stick to her diet and workouts.

A source close to the project reveals what went wrong. "The makers gave her a couple of months to get lean. She had to do outfit trials and also begin physical training. However, she was unable to look the part even after that."

They wanted to start shooting by June-end. Now that Sonakshi is citing delays for walking out of the project, there's buzz in Tollywood about how she lost out on the role due to her weight trouble.

The source adds that now Kamal Haasan is considering some other faces for the film. "It's a big budget film and he doesn't want any more delays. The reason he chose Sonakshi is because he really liked her work in Dabangg and thought she would appeal to the audience down south as well. However, now that things haven't worked out, they have gone separate ways."

Sonakshi remained unavailable for comment.

Jackie Shroff bares all!

We're not quite sure why people would want to seeJackie Shroff nude, but for those of you who do, here's news. The actor has dropped all his clothes for a role in the Tamil flick Aaranya Kaandam, directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja, which is currently running in theatres across Tamil Nadu. However, his naughty bits have been blurred out. 

The film ran into trouble when the local scissorhands (the regional censor board) demanded as many as 50-odd cuts before passing it with an 'Adults only' certificate. "Why the fuss about sex in cinema? It is one of the nine rasas of life," philosophises Jackie, whose last role was as Sai Baba. So what was it like going nude for the camera? "It was part of the script and I had no reservations."

While this isn't the first time the actor has stripped (Andar Baahar and Rangeela), he went one step ahead this time because of the role. "I think I have a good physique without working out. My generation never bragged about six-pack abs. We had fit bodies and were comfortable showing it off on screen."

Aamir looks down upon small screen?

The Indian Television industry is getting bigger and better each year. 

No wonder then, Bollywood stalwarts like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and superstars likeSalman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan and Abhishek Bachchan have all accepted offers to appear on the small screen.

According to reports, Sanjay Dutt too will be making his TV debut with Bigg Boss' next season. However, one star who has stayed away from thesmall screen is Aamir Khan.

Offers galore for the star to either host or judge some shows, but he has always chosen not to be part of any. Aamir says, "I don't think the time is right for me to appear on TV as yet. I will go on a show if my friends, who are hosting it, invite me. But I am not currently inclined to host or judge a TV show."

The actor, who is a one of the guests on the Bengali version of Kaun Banega Crorepati hosted by Saurav Ganguly, says that he is enjoying doing films right now and therefore TV is not in his scheme of things.

It can be recalled that there have been reports about the superstar hosting a talk show which draws inspiration from Oprah Winfrey's popular show. But Aamir denies any such plans. He in fact feels that he is at the peak of his career and should only concentrate on his films and productions.

It seems Aamir Khan feels that one needs to shift from the big to the small screen only when one doesn't have many film projects to boast about. And we can't deny that the funda works, the biggest example being Amitabh Bachchan. It can be recalled that Big B's film career was on a downward slope and then KBC came along. His hosting the show with an ever increasing TRP proved lucky for him and changed the mindsets about the brand Bachchan.

But whatever Aamir thinks about the small screen, we hope he does debut on TV for his fans are sure to love him in a different avatar. 

Bipasha Basu goes gaga over Abhinay Deo

Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu, who was last seen in Rohan Sippy's " Dum Maaro Dum" is going gaga over the new director in town - Abhinay Deo.

Abhinay made his debut this year with Abhishek Bachchan starrer "Game".

The faithful man is a dinosaur: Karan Johar

At the rate at which they're being caught with their pants down, few, if any, celebrities will worry about pulling them up anymore. 

It's open season as skeletons rattle merrily and make no bones about the fact that they've had a neat scene on the side while their partners were sometimes not looking, but oftentimes fully looking.

The institution of marriage is in high infidelity zone as everyone from footballers to financial top guns, golfers to geeks, and politicians to the pretty people seek their pleasures outside their marriages even as their partners play it down, play for money, play it up, or are indeed busy playing the field themselves.

We've hauled the errant men and, in a few cases, women over the coals, but should we be cutting them some slack and extending concessions given that, as Hugh Hefner of Playboy fame and temperament also recently remarked, monogamy is unnatural? Or is it?

Monopoly of monogamy
Rubbishing the monogamous theory of mankind, filmmaker Karan Johar says, "Monogamy as a state of mind does not exist. Earlier, one reconciled to the idea of monogamy because there were fewer outlets of expression in case one felt emotionally or sexually stifled. In today's urban scenario, our exposure to the outside world is immense and our levels of tolerance have come down, living as we do our lives at a frighteningly frenetic pace. In such a scenario, it'd be foolhardy for anyone to think that everything's hunky-dory in the space of marriage. In my reckoning, in 95 per cent of the marriages there's some degree of mental, emotion or sexual infidelity."

Television actor Smriti Irani, however, doesn't buy this dim view about marriage. "How can you negate something that's worked very well till now? Relationships are not based on random trends and aberrant instances. They're based on trust and friendship. Most people I know have very loving relationships," she argues.

Ask Karan about marriages, where to all outwardly appearances it seems like a perfect union, and he retorts, "Chances are that in this seemingly blissful monogamous existence you've people of alternate sexual orientations trapped in conventional arrangements, or married incumbents who're indifferent and apathetic to the sexual content of their marriage. These are all cases of accidental monogamy where the entire marital set-up is farcical. To my mind, the faithful man is a dinosaur, and his Jurassic Park is not in this universe! "The alpha male's tendencies have more to do with phallic pride and marking one's territory," says amateur filmmaker Debjani Dhaliwal. She adds, "He needs to reinforce his intrinsic animal instinct of fertility by ensuring he's 'wellreceived' by members of the opposite sex. But women aren't lagging either. If a woman finds that her husband is unable to meet her expectations in areas concerning intimacy — emotional, sexual or psychological — rather than go on a spree of chest-beating or blaming destiny, she opts for a simpler, nostrings-attached alternative — a part-time lover of sorts."

The expert view
If cynics scoff at the ease with which monogamy is being dismissed if only to accommodate one's indiscretions and sexually deviant ways, there's biological evidence to support this view too.

Says andrologist and WHO sexual medicine expert Dr Sudhakar Krishnamurti, "Nature and biological scripting did not intend man to be monogamous. Much like most of the animal kingdom, human beings are essentially polygamous. But religious orthodoxy, governmental and marriage laws all got in the way and made us monogamous beings. We may have gotten used to monogamy, but it still is a tightrope walk as we fight off our natural instincts to stay true to this cultural and social imposition."

"Monogamy exists just so that it can stand up to our notions of moral uprightness," says director Onir, who's tackled themes of love and sexuality in his films. "We should have a lot more say in how we want our marriage set-ups to be instead of being forced to follow a model that may not work out in the long run."

Honesty, a lonely word?
Most women, says Karan, know that their spouses are probably getting their kicks elsewhere, but if the husband were to break this news to them, all hell will break loose. "The men go out on business trips and come back laden with gifts for the woman. So many marriages survive as a result of this purchase. Designer brands and capitalist economies thrive on this capitalist guilt purchase. We put too high a premium on fidelity despite our predilection for straying."

Continues Karan, "The worst thing you can do to your marriage is to come clean in the hope that you'd gain some brownie points. You have violated the marital agreement, but you don't need to give her a first hand account of it thinking she'll appreciate your honesty and overlook the transgressions. If that's your way to reduce your guilt quotient, then let it be known that the bedroom is a big giveaway. Extra bursts of sexual energy and going overboard in your affections to complete indifference and disinterest, it's difficult to keep your wanderings a secret. A woman will instinctively know when you've been unfaithful. And chances are she'll leave things be because there's too much to lose by upsetting the arrangement."

He adds, "On the other hand, when you fess up to your amorous deeds, she's forced to take a position, and that often spells ruin."

The way out
Elaborates Onir, "First, we need to get rid of the dirty tag we've attached to sex. We shouldn't be afraid to question conventions. Many a time we're forced to remain in a loveless existence because of the fear that's been drilled deep into us that a marriage is a pact and, come what may, it's for keeps. The reason many people stay put in marriages where the love has all gone out is because that's the only legal way of procreating. Unless it gets the kiss-of-life dose, the institution of marriage is bound to collapse."

Sounding a tad more optimistic, Dr Sudhakar avers, "While marriage is not going to go out of fashion or business anytime soon, there's a need to reinvent it. Now that we've become far more accepting of samesex marriages, live-in relationships, polyamory, and open marriages, we need to perhaps make allowances for the fact that love and loyalty in a marriage can seldom be a given in the times we live in. But if we're talking of moving beyond the confines of the limited space that marriage offers, both the gander and the goose must be given equal leeway. Though men are more prone to adultery needing as they do raw sex, women are also not above cheating. Liberating marriage from the confines of m o n oga my does not mean encouraging or promoting promiscuity and recklessness. It's possible to love more than one person responsibly. I see many of my clients opting for open marriages these days. Whatever works best, I'd say!"

Actor Manisha Koirala, who emphatically says this will be her first and last marriage, has the last word. According to her, it's "totally natural to stay monogamous as there are other important issues in a relationship besides sex."

Now if only everyone would see it her way! 

Anushka Sharma ignores Ranveer Singh

Apparently at a recent international event, Anushka Sharma and good friend Ranveer Singh were at loggerheads throughout. 

Says an insider, "She has been signing films with big heroes like Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgn and big banners. She now feels she has moved on. Also Ranveer and Sonakshi Sinha have become very close and did an act together at the event — upsetting Anushka even more. The morning after the event, the two had a fight and there was yelling. While Ranvir felt Anushka was ignoring him and paying more attention to Shah Rukh, Anushka fired him for being too nice to Sonakshi. The fight was in full view of onlookers right outside their rooms. After that they refused to talk to each other."

Sonu Sood joins PETA

Sonu Sood plays a cop in Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap. The guy seems to be taking his role as a protector rather seriously. He is a wildlife ambassador for PETA. 

The actor has not only shot a campaign promoting vegetarianism, but has also written to the Candian government to stop a sport called the Canadian seal hunt. Every year, fisherfolk beat thousands of seals to death and sell the animals' pelts on the international fur market.

Many of the seals killed in the massacre are only a few weeks old. This slaughter is the largest massacre of marine mammals in the world. World leaders such as US President Barack Obama and His Holiness The Dalai Lama have denounced the massacre while the likes of Pamela Anderson, Bryan Adams, Ke$ha and Iggy Pop, just to name a few, have already raised concern about this issue. Sonu becomes one of the first Indians to endorse the cause and add his name to this growing list of celebrities speaking up against this massacre. "It is a very cruel sport and should be stopped. I support the efforts to conserve wildlife and am happy to do my bit and contribute," says Sonu.

Karan Johar's French twist

Karan Johar may soon acquire the rights to Heartbreaker, a French romantic comedy (2010) starring Romain Duris, Vanessa Paradis, Julie Ferrier and Andrew Lincoln, directed by Pascal Chaumeil. 

Says an insider, "Though Karan is currently knee-deep in pre-production for his next directorial venture Student Of The Year (shooting begins next month), he's keen on acquiring the rights to Heartbreaker and remake it. However, it's not clear whether he will direct it himself or let one of his trusted directors take charge."

The source adds, "KJo was recently in London to negotiate for the rights. The pricing hasn't been finalised as yet. Apparently, he's keen to cast Shah Rukh as the main lead. The story is about Alex, his sister and her husband who operate a business designed to break relationships. The trio concocts elaborate ruses to deceive the women and while deceiving one woman, Alex falls in love with her."

Johar had recently posted on his microblogging page, "Actually in London to acquire the rights of a superb French film! If all goes well the French film will translate beautifully into an Indian love story..can't wait to get it going." A source close to KJo notes, "He will only reveal the name of the film once the deal comes through."

A SEQUEL, TOO? 
There's also buzz doing the B-Town rounds that a sequel to Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is being considered. However, that film will only happen next year because KJo's first priority is Student Of The Year, which he starts shooting in mid-August this year, beginning with a Mumbai schedule. A source close to Karan maintains, "It was just a thought. Right now, Karan hasn't decided on anything as his focus now is SOTY and only that film. If K3G happens at all it will only be next year." 

Bipasha Basu is single again

There's nothing more tempting than going on the rebound after one relationship ends. Bipasha did the same with Josh Hartnett after splitting with long-time boyfriend John Abraham. 

The two spend the time together on set constructively and while he loved all the attention, she used him to divert her mind. But now Josh has gone back to ex-girlfriend Sophie Lie, Bips is feeling lost. A source reveals, "She misses him immensely and puts his photos on her Blackberry.

And when people ask her about him, all she does is blush and smile coyly." Meanwhile we do know Bips has a secret man hidden away. Watch this space for more. 

I support them, but I'm not a lesbian: Celina Jaitely

I have openly supported the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community and I don't feel shy about doing it. 

But what annoys me most is when people pass very stupid remarks. You can't even imagine, people have gone to the extent of saying that I'm a lesbian and my father and brother are gay!

It's so weird and difficult to even understand the mindset of such people. Sadly, people in India have still not accepted the community. It is sad that people have always misunderstood me. However, it does not bother me, nor my family members. I shall still continue to show my support towards the community," Celina Jaitly told DT.

The actress was in Delhi to perform at the sangeet ceremony of Payal Bansal and Deepak Kanodia on Saturday evening in Gurgaon.

When we asked why, being a gay rights campaigner, she skipped the second anniversary celebrations of the decriminalisation of homosexuality which kicked off at Jantar Mantar the same evening, she replied, "Yes, I was aware about the celebrations in the capital, and it's truly a joyous moment for all of us.

Thanks to all who have supported the community. Unfortunately, I recently underwent a knee surgery and haven't been able to concentrate on my work." Knee surgery? Then how was she dancing at the wedding? "The family is known to me for years now, and I couldn't have refused being present at the special occasion. Honestly speaking, it was with a lot of difficulty that I was able to perform on stage. But thankfully, people didn't realise I had problems while dancing. Luckily, the guests enjoyed my performance, and that made me feel so nice."

Celina got engaged last year to Dubai based Australian hotelier Peter Hagg. She proudly told us, "My fiancé was known to my family. In fact, he is my mama's (uncle's) best friend, and that's how we were introduced. He would visit us at home, and gradually, we fell in love.

We plan to get married next year." Wasn't she getting married in September? "We had planned to marry in September. However, my brother's wedding is in September as he is in the army, and will soon be getting transferred. Due to my brother's wedding on September 3, we have had to postpone our wedding," she said, and continued, "We'll get married in the traditional Indian way. Peter is all excited to wear an Indian outfit. Both the families are happy for us."

Delhi Belly, BHTB housefull over weekend

Aamir Khan's home production Delhi Belly has broken the dry spell at box office by earning Rs.15.65 crore on its first two days despite being an adult comedy, while Amitabh Bachchan's family entertainer Bbuddah...Hoga Teraa Baap (BHTB) is at Rs.4.26 crore.

Corp's Rs.10 crore Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap was Rs.1.91 crore, but it picked up on Saturday by grossing Rs.2.35, said film critic Taran Adarsh on his Twitter page.

"'Bbuddah HTB' would've collected double/triple of what it has, had it averted clash with other films. Would've got more screens also," he wrote.

Anant Verma, director and business head, DT Cinemas told IANS that both the films are doing great, "however, Delhi Belly is slightly better as it has more shows than Bbuddah...

"Moreover, it caters to the young crowd, while Bbuddah.. is meant for family. Delhi Belly has an interesting concept and it has been promoted in such a way that the audience know what to expect from it," said Verma.

Made at a budget of Rs.25 crore including print and publicity, Imran Khan-starrer earned Rs.7.15 crore friday and Rs 8.50 crore on Saturday.

While Bbuddah... is about a flamboyant Paris-returned gangster, played by Amitabh, Delhi Belly captures the urban, money-is-everything, foul-mouthed India with Imran Khan, Vir Das and Kunal Roy Kapoor in the lead roles.

However, considering the budget and genre of the two films, both are doing well. In fact, in some multiplexes "Bbuddah..." is giving neck to neck competition to Delhi Belly.

"The response has been good. All the shows of Delhi Belly and  Bbuddah.., are going houseful. Yesterday, Delhi Belly was 99 percent while Bbuddah was 98.5 percent," said Rakesh Warikoo, general manager (operations) Spice Cinemas, who are running 18 shows of Delhi Belly and eight shows of Bbuddah... Hoga Teraa Baap.

Yogesh Raizada of Waves Cinemas sees Delhi Belly doing well in the long run and suggests "Bbuddah... is a complete masala film and a family entertainer. It is Amitabh all the way. All the performances are also good. It makes for an enjoyable watch," he said.

Girl ends life to donate eyes to dad

NADIA: For days, Mumpy would listen quietly as the elders discussed how only an eye surgery could save her father's vision and a kidney transplant her brother's life. But both surgeries were beyond the family's meagre means. So, Mumpy hit upon a plan, which to her 12-year-old mind seemed the answer to all troubles. She would kill herself, which would save the dowry, too, and her organs would give her loved ones back their lives.

Mumpy did stick to her plan. But the suicide note in which she had scribbled down her wishes was found the day after she was cremated.

The incident took place in Dhantala's Jhorpara on June 27. Her father's and brother's ailments had left Mumpy Sarkar, a Class VI student, anxious. One of the kidneys of her brother Monojit, a Class XI student, was damaged and the other was getting weak. Father Mridul Sarkar, a daily wager, was also gradually losing his eyesight.

"The family had approached the local MLA for help. We had decided to grant them some money for the boy's treatment. But the tragedy happened all of a sudden," said Dhantala panchayat pradhan Tapas Tarafdar.

Mumpy had taken elder sister Monica, a Class VIII student, into confidence and had urged her to commit suicide as well for the "cause". When Mumpy told Monica about her plan on the morning of June 27, the latter laughed it off and left for school. Their father was away at work and mother Rita had gone to fetch rice.

"Finding herself alone at home, Mumpy consumed Thiodan, a pesticide. Then, she ran to meet her father, who was about half a kilometre away. She told him that she had dreamt that someone had poured poison into her mouth and her stomach ached. Her alarmed father took her to a local pharmacy immediately where she was given some medicines. But her condition worsened soon and she had to be rushed to the local Baranberia hospital. From there, she was referred to Anulia hospital. But the doctors declared her brought dead," Tarafdar said.

It was only the day after her cremation that Mumpy's father found a note on her bed. Addressed to her mother, the girl requested her to make use of her eyes and kidney for the treatment of her father and brother. This left the aggrieved family inconsolable. "We were too late in understanding the feelings of a very sensitive child," Mridul wept. Mumpy's mother has gone into shock. 

Latest standoff: Pakistan, US squabble over drone base

WASHINGTON: You have a friend you invited in as a guest in one of your bedrooms when things were good. But the friendship has soured and you want the guest to leave. No way, says the friend, refusing to vacate. You can't call the cops because the friend is himself a supercop. To make matters worse, someone in your house has sublet that guest room to another party who backs your guest. Your house if full of interlopers you thought were your friends.

Welcome to the bizarre houseguest drama involving Pakistan, United States, the "forcible occupation" of the Shamsi air base, and some bit players such as theUAE. Located in remote Balochistan, Shamsi is from where the US is said to be launching some of its drone attacks aimed at Pakistani terrorists. Pakistannow wants US to vacate Shamsi. US response: "Sorry. Can't. Won't."

First offered to Washington in the early days after 9/11 by the Musharraf regime when it simpered before the American threat that it will be bombed back to the Stone Age if it did not cooperate, Shamsi's US operations was a well-kept secret till February 2009 when Internet trawlers ferreted out Google earth photos showing drone aircraft at the base. News that the US was using Pakistani facilities to carry out its Predator campaign within Pakistani territory against Pakistani targets embarrassed Islamabad no end, sparking off a campaign to evict American assets.

Amid growing outrage about the Drone campaign and the civilian casualties it is causing (contested by the US), Pakistan managed to get Washington to vacate the Jacobabad air base, the second of the two airbases US was operating from. But Shamsi remained unresolved, and the US continued to use it despite Pakistani protests. How could Washington refuse to leave a military airbase against the express will of the host government? This is where things turn murky.

For one, it appears that the air base is not even under Pakistani control. Like with some other parts of the country (notable areas of Pak-occupied Kashmir which it ceded to China and parts of the Khyber Pakhtunwa given up to extremists), that Islamabad has relinquished to earn itself the dubious reputation as a rentier state, it turned out that Shamsi has been leased out to some Gulf potentates.

During the Pakistan national assembly debate on May 13 following the Abbottabad operation, Pakistan air chief Rao Qamar Suleman reportedly told lawmakers in camera than Shamsi has been under the control of the United Arab Emirates and PAF has no say in the matter. In fact, the Shamsi air strip was originally built for Arab sheikhs who flew into Pakistan to hunt for the houbara bustard, a rare bird some Arabs believe has aphrodisiac properties.

Now, the US-UAE arrangement in Shamsi had rendered the Pakistani establishment impotent.

But earlier this week, Pakistani Defense Minister Ahmed Mukhtar rose up against the deal, telling the media that Islamabad had asked Washington to leave Shamsi. The US responded with an in-your-face rejection, saying "that base is neither vacated nor being vacated."

In fact, Washington went a step further, suggesting that Mukhtar was merely posturing against the US to mollify inflamed public opinion and arrangements for continued use of Shamsi were very much in place. Backing the US position, another federal minister, Firdous Awan, undermined her own colleague, saying news of Pakistan demanding US exit from Shamsi was "bogus."

US officials publicly remain cryptic about the Shamsi situation. State department spokesman Mark Toner on Friday referred all questions about the subject to the Pakistani Government "for their comments and clarification of their comments," adding that he was "not aware that we have any military personnel on that base." The addendum suggested that the CIA is in control of the base -- and will remain so regardless of Islamabad's views on the matter.

US wars leave 225,000 dead, cost $4.4 trillion: Study

WASHINGTON: US wars launched since the attacks of September 11, 2001 have left 225,000 dead and cost up to $4.4 trillion, according to a new study by university researchers.

The study published by Brown University this week focused on the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and counter-terrorism campaigns in Pakistan andYemen, which came in the wake of the 9/11 attacks on the United States.

The authors argued that governments almost always go to war underestimating the potential duration and costs of a conflict while overestimating "the political objectives that can be accomplished by the use of brute force."

The study said "an extremely conservative estimate" of the casualty toll was about 225,000 people killed and 365,000 wounded in the wars so far.

The number of soldiers killed comes to 31,741, including about 6,000 Americans, 1,200 allied troops, 9,900 Iraqis, 8,800 Afghans, 3,500 Pakistanis as well as 2,300 US private security contractors, it said.

The civilian toll was much higher, with an estimated 172,000 dead, including about 125,000 Iraqis, 35,000 Pakistanis and 12,000 Afghans, it said.

The study acknowledged that estimating the number of dead was difficult, particularly the toll for insurgents, putting the number at between 20,000 to 51,000 insurgents killed.

The report found that 168 reporters and 266 humanitarian workers were among the dead since theUnited States launched its "war on terror" after 9/11.

The wars also have triggered a massive flow of refugees and displaced persons, with more than 7.8 million displaced, mostly in Iraq and Afghanistan, it said.

The study estimated the financial cost of the wars at a minimum of $3.7 trillion and up to $4.4 trillion, which represents about a quarter of the country's current debt.

The researchers arrived at a much larger figure than the Pentagon's previous estimates, as they included spending by the Department of Homeland Security to counter terrorist threats, government projections for spending on wounded veterans through 2051 and war-related funds from the State Department and the US Agency for International Development.

The US government has previously cited the price tag for the wars at about one trillion dollars.

"Our estimate is larger because we include more than the direct Pentagon appropriation for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the larger global war on terror," said the study.

"Wars always cost more than what the Pentagon spends for the duration of the combat operation."

UK asks Pakistan to move decisively against al-Qaida

LONDON: UK has told Pakistan to move "decisively" against al-Qaida following the death of the terror outfit's chief Osama bin Laden.

"Now there is an opportunity to move decisively against al-Qaida following Osama bin Laden's death," British Prime David Cameron told Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari yesterday during a meeting at 10, Downing Street here.

Bin Laden was killed in a US Navy SEALs raid in Pakistan's garrison town Abbottabad on May 2.

During their first face-to-face talks since bin Laden's death, Cameron and Zardari discussed "terrorism, agreeing that it is a global phenomenon that should be fought by intensifying cooperation at all levels."

The Prime Minister also appreciated Islamabad's efforts in the fight against terror.

A spokesman at 10, Downing Street said: "Cameron appreciated Pakistan's full commitment to fight terrorism and stressed that there was now an opportunity to move decisively against al-Qaida, the extremist organisation that has harmed Pakistan as well as other countries internationally."

At their talks, the two leaders "agreed that a stable Afghanistan is in the interest of countries in the region and the rest of the world," the spokesman said. "They both support the Afghan-led process towards reconciliation and peace."

Cameron also encouraged Pakistan to play a constructive role in supporting an Afghan political process within the framework of the Afghan constitution that separates the Afghan Taliban from al-Qaida and persuades them to move away from violence.

Anil Kapoor's missing from MI 4 trailers

Anil Kapoor's much-discussed role in Mission: Impossible 4 – Ghost Protocol has turned out to be a damp squib for the actor's fans when the first trailers of the Tom Cruise-starrer were leaked online. 

Anil is missing from the video which has Cruise and other characters. The buzz is that none of the frames in the trailer have even a glimpse of the actor and the actor has a two-minute scene in the film itself. If that's the truth then it would be very sad for this to happen to an actor of Anil's calibre after making a Hollywood debut in Slumdog Millionaire.

Shahid Kapoor completes Mausam

Shahid Kapoor has finally completed shooting for his father's directorial debut Mausam. The actor was involved in the making of this film since the last two years, during which he completely concentrated on Mausam. 

The actor officially declared that the film is complete. "Final patchwork is done. It's a wrap for me on Mausam," said Shahid while talking about the film. Shahid who plays an Air Force officer in the film also took up air force training for a month. It can be recalled that he is the first Bollywood actor who has flown F-16 fighter plane.

The film shoot ran behind the schedule due to several production reasons. Its main actress Sonam fell ill during the making of this film. It is also believed that Sonam and Shahid had differences and didn't get along but later Sonam explained that they are good pals.

It can be recalled that the film was earlier pushed to September 9 and again it has been delayed by a week. Mausam will be releasing with Vipul Shah's forthcoming film Force.

Ram Gopal Varma, who has made a film inspired by the true story of the heinous murder of Neeraj Grover, says he wants to sign Kannada actress Maria Susairaj, who has been sentenced to a three-year term for destroying evidence after the television executive's murder. 
"Maria susairaj wanted to become famous as an actress and she became famous as a murdress..if things went well it could have been a 'Rangeela' for her. Since things went wrong, her dreams of becoming an actress went for a toss," Varma wrote on microblogging site Twitter. "Now that she has been released I want to sign Maria susairaj for a film," he further posted. Grover was stabbed to death by former navy officer and Susairaj's boyfriend Jerome Mathew in her flat and he has been sentenced to 10 years in jail. The actress was Thursday convicted of destroying evidence, but would walk free for time done as an undertrial

Spoofing Ranbir Kapoor

Ranbir Kapoor seems to be an easy target, thanks to his womanising. At a recent event, hosts Boman Irani and Riteish Deshmukh based an entire skit, where they poked fun at the actor. 

A source who attended the function reveals, "It was a funny skit where they spoofed the train scene from Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. They do a version of what would happen if RK was in DDLJ. The skit has Ranbir being chased by Deepika, Katrina and Sonam. But unlike Shah Rukh Khan who was keen to have Kajol on board, Ranbir is shown running in the opposite direction."

Ankita's eye campaign gets B-Town support

Sixteen years after Aishwarya Rai Bachchanpledged her eyes, beauty queen Pantaloons Femina Miss India — International 2011 Ankita Shoreyhas done the same. But Ankita is now taking it to the next level. She has initiated a campaign, supported by Provogue, to encourage the general public to pledge their eyes .

For this, she has urged Bollywood stars to come forward and be part of her campaign. Celebs like Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, and Karan Johar have applauded her efforts.

"Actors are loved by the masses and when they do something, others follow," says Ankita. "We are not going to take our eyes to heaven with us. They will be burnt to ashes on earth, so I'd rather pledge to change someone's life after I breathe my last."

For this initiative, Ankita has associated with the Happy Home And School for the Blind at Worli. She recently met principal Mehr Banaji, who has received the President's Award and the Padma Shri for her efforts in this field. "When I went there, I saw that there's so much the school is doing... they teach kids weaving, carpentry, music and other crafts. And there's a lot of enthusiasm to learn."

Nikhil Chaturvedi, Managing Director of Provogue (India) Limited, is glad to be part of the initiative. He says, "I really respect Ankita for taking this step. Sanjay Dutt will soon be seen in the film Happily Divorced produced by Dharam Oberoi and Sanjay Ahluwalia. Ahluwalia says, "The film is meant for today's urban adult, who have an modern outlook towards life. 

Rather than treating the whole divorce issue as a complicated and serious affair, we have looked at the whole process of separation from a very practical perspective and have tried to give it a humorous angle." It's nice to see directors approach stories from different perspective. One has seen enough love stories. I don't tweet about celebs as a policy. I tweet about social issues close to my heart. As a rule, I don't tweet about celebs, actors or personalities of any field (sic). They don't need any attention, and I'm interested in the common man, not celebrities.

Someone called me from Mumbai earlier, and at 7.30am I got a call from a website saying they're going to run a story, so I said, why are you asking me? And they said we want a clarification. I haven't logged on to my computer. I said I don't have a computer because it got stolen two months ago and I haven't bought a new one. I said I don't own a laptop, and if you actually check this comment, and if you look at any comments on Facebook or Twitter, they say 'posted from iPhone'. I have an iPhone, and several other comments are also 'posted from an iPhone'. This one does not say 'posted from an iPhone', which means it was posted from a laptop. It's on record that my laptop was stolen. And I'm not that desperate that I'll go to a friend's house and say, 'Hey, can I open your laptop, post a comment, then shut your laptop and go back home?' I'm as of now not so desperate.

Well, then, wherever it's come from, the comment must be getting you a lot of unwanted attention. Aren't you going to have it removed? 
I've nothing to worry about – I haven't committed a crime or anything, I've done nothing wrong, so I don't really... I've not broken the law as of now, so I don't think I'm going to get arrested, and I haven't defamed anyone, I don't think I'm going to get sued, so let it be. And I don't have a laptop and I'm leaving right now for Pune. My horse has got colic and I got a call at 5am. So it's not my priority to go to someone's house and open a laptop... because on the iPhone, as you know, you can only tweet or post. You can't get into history and delete. You need to be on a laptop for that. So I'm not... my priority is my horse, my priority is not some tweet posted four days ago. Not interested.

Shahid Kapoor's still the Sexiest Vegetarian!

Shahid Kapoor has won the title of Asia's Sexiest Vegetarian Man for 2011 after a fierce battle on PETA Asia Pacific website. Singer Faye Wong has been crowned Asia's Sexiest Vegetarian Woman. 

Other popular contenders include Bollywood film heavyweight Kareena Kapoor, model-turned-Hollywood hottie Maggie Q and Mongolian singer Nominjin, Taiwanese actor Blue Lan, Super Girl Jane Zhang, actors Gao Yuanyuan and Barbie Hsu, and songwriter Louis Cheung. Favourite celebs from outside the continent include actorsNatalie Portman, Hayden Panettiere and Milo Ventimiglia; fighting champion Jake Shields and singers Anthony Kiedis (of the Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Leona Lewis.

Aamir dismisses Shah Rukh's director

He said, who is he? While there have been mixed reactions to the infamous DK Bose number from his next release, we all know the strongest one came from SRK's director Anubhav Sinha. 

Of course Big B strongly reacted to this too, but that's a different story. Sometime ago, at a press conference when Kiran Rao was asked to react to Anubhav Sinha's snide remark about the song, she rolled her eyes and said, "Anubhav Sinha, who?". It was repeat act when zoOm threw the same question at Aamir. With a smirk, he just dismissed it, "Who's Anubhav Sinha, what has he done?" Over to you Shah Rukh!

Amitabh Bachchan to buy a Harley Davidson soon

Amitabh Bachchan may be a sexagenarian but he is definitely not a Bbuddah. The superstar is still young at heart and it won't be an exaggeration to say that the title of his next is an extension of his real persona. 

Bbuddah ... Hoga Tera Baap, hits screens on July 1 and Big B has been on a roll promoting his home production. Talking about one of the favourite moments from the film, Bachchan said, "I had toride this Harley Davidson for one of my scenes. Thebike is very stylish but when I tried to ride it, it felt as if I am pulling an entire building along with me."

Though the superstar has rode two wheelers in his films - remember Yeh Dosti song from Sholay and the title track from Muqaddar Ka Sikander - he requested director Puri Jagannath to give him some time to get his biking act right before the scene was shot.

Given his old age, riding the bike was a toughie but Big B totally loved the experience and now wants to buy his own Harley Davidson. He feels that there are many adventures left to be fulfilled and owning the 'beast bike' is one of them. Big B says, "It's a fantastic bike and I want to buy one soon. I want to ride it on Mumbai streets. I wish I had bought one before but it's never too late," he signed off. 

Abhishek- Ajay: Bollywood's new hit jodi

If you think that the hottest male jodi in B-Town were the Dostana boys, John and Abhishek, think again. There's another hot new jodi in the making. 

Recently zoOm met up with the comedy partners,Ajay Devgn and Rohit Shetty and the later revealed, "Hum Singham ke baad phir apni aukaad pe aa jayenge. Our next film, Bol Bachchan with Abhishek and Ajay, will be an out-and-out comedy entertainer." When asked if we'll see the Dostana-like chemistry here again, he said, "I've scripted the film in a way that their chemistry will show onscreen and Abhishek and Ajay will soon become the new hit jodi of Bollywood." Well, someone is getting a wee-bit 'J' over here, and you know who that is, dearies. It's Johnny boy, of course.

Karan Johar wants to cash in on Imran Khan

Karan Johar seems to have delayed the release of his film 'Short Term Shaadi' to bank on Imran Khan's rising popularity. 

Karan Johar's film Short Term Shaadi starring Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor is more of less ready. However the filmmaker, who is known to declare the release dates of his films much in advance, is far from deciding one for this film. The reason seems to be Imran Khan. 

No the young Khan is not giving any grief to KJo. In fact Johar is trying to 'bank' on Imran's rising popularity. It's not like Karan Johar needs to make any efforts to find a distributor for his film. However trade sources insist that it's a smart business move on the part of Karan Johar. 

So far Imran Khan has been in news but his films after Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na haven't really been huge success. Be it Kidnap, Luck, I Hate Luv Storys or Break Ke Baad , his films have never been blockbuster material. Perhaps that should change after Delhi Belly and Mere Brother Ki Dulhan . 

"Imran Khan's Delhi Belly seems to be hot property with the immense buzz surrounding the movie. The film should undoubtedly get a record-breaking opening", says a trade source on condition of anonymity. "Then there is Yash Raj Films' Mere Brother Ki Dulhan where the fresh pairing of Imran and Katrina should again attract audiences. So, Imran Khan's market value is sure expected to rise after these two films". So Karan Johar could get a better deal with the success of these two films of Imran Khan and so he seems to have pushed Short Term Shaadi in November.
