He came with a 'dhoom', recreated the magic with Dhoom 2 and then suddenly got lost in time.Sanjay Gadhvi, who made his directorial debut with Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai looked like he was here to stay as he gave two back to back blockbusters and became the new face of the Yash Raj camp.
But indeed, the course of success is not always that smooth. Fate has other plans as he grappled with an unsuccessful film and got into a legal tussle with the producers.
But as he was in Ahmedabad to inaugurate a film making competition, AT got to talk to the man who hails from a small village near Surendranagar, and he opened his heart for a candid chat and shared nuggets from his times of success and dismay with similar frankness.
"I have failed to make a good film," he accepted without any reservations, "But who hasn't?" he says. "The failure of that movie after two successful ventures actually came as a blessing in disguise. It helped me carve out a basic philosophy in life, that whatever happens you have to get over it in 90 days and move on", he adds. "This is what has kept me rooted in all these years."
When we asked him how difficult it is to cope up with such situations, he replies instantly, "It's very difficult. Your ego is hurt and when you see things in retrospect it feels that every shot you okayed was all wrong, but one has to come out of it."
What does he think about directors concentrating more on cinematography these days and not the script? "Everyone has a style of their own. There have always been people, in every era, who have made movies with a certain style. Films allow you freedom to do what you want to. Making a film is like carving something out of clay and making your own picture."
So what kind of movies does he wish to make now? "I set out to make all kinds of movies, from the likes of Guide and Lagaan to the original Golmaal, Chupke-Chupke. And now I want to do romantic comedies." He adds with a grin, "I make movies for the producer, but he needs to know who he is making the movie for."
When asked who he wants to work with he said, "I want to work with everyone. Be it Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh (Khan), Ranbir (Kapoor), Katrina (Kaif) or Tom Cruise, Ashton Kutcher Cameron Diaz -the list goes on."
Taking the course of discussion on a lighter and more personal mode, we asked what is he really like from within? "I am a true blue Gujju. But you could also call me a total 'Rajsitapurian'. Rajsitapur is a small village near Surendranagar and I go there often. It's a nice break from the fast-paced life." He adds, "I still enjoy sleeping and sitting on the floor, sipping tea from the saucer, it's fun."
