Actress Pooja Bedi has spent the last few days doing nothing but supporting Anna Hazare's campaign against corruption in any way she can.
On Monday afternoon, she and her father arrived at Delhi to extend their support to Anna at the Ramlila grounds. After addressing the lakh-strong crowd at the grounds, Pooja spoke to us about being part of the campaign, and said, "The campaign is only gaining momentum. The weaker Anna grows, the more the momentum gains strength. I think it is an incredible people's movement. It is unprecedented, something that has never been seen before, at least in my lifetime or, for that matter, in my father's lifetime. Corruption is an issue that affects every one of us in every single aspect of our lives. It is something we have been exposed to, it is something we abhor and it is something we have seen from petty levels all the way to humungous proportions. What we deal with is petty corruption and what affects the lowest common denominator of the country is the mega corruption. Every time a person dies of hunger it is because of corruption. Every time someone dies of medical neglect in the country, it is because of corruption."
And that is why, says Pooja, Anna has become so important to people. She explains, "Anna has been the trigger point on the wave of scam after scam after scam. He has given the masses focus, direction, hope and an incredible sense of belief. I have been speaking on news channels, tweeting about it, etc. And the Anna team called us. We paid for our own tickets and paid for all our expenses. It is every citizen's duty to show support. It is a burning issue for us and that is why it has gathered this much momentum. Lessons must be learnt, crimes must be punished and precedents must be set, simply to ensure that they know they can't do this again."
