Powai girl back to Delhi

After three years of living on the streets, aspiring actor Renu Rathi finally left for home. Her sister Seema came from Gurgaon on Monday to take the 27-year-old back to her father, fours sisters and brother. "She's been through a lot and we'll ensure she doesn't return," said Seema.

After performing in plays in Delhi, Renu came to Mumbai to become an actor. She lived in Bandra until December 2008, when she was thrown out for non-payment of rent. Renu then lived on Bandra's streets for two years, fed and clothed by well-wishers. Attempts to send her home proved futile as she kept her identity secret, going by the name 'Rochelle'.

Recently, she had moved to Powai, where locals tried helping her. Renu soon became a menace for residents and police in that area. She would sit at isolated spots and was targeted by hooligans. On occasions, men had tried forcing her into their vehicles.

After Renu was found, an NGO helped her. Pastors from SEAL convinced Renu, and took her to a home for the helpless. "We counselled her, got her father's number, and called him," said Fr Biju from the NGO.

On Monday, Renu's sister arrived to escort her home. "She suffers from mental trauma. We'll ensure she gets treated," says Seema.

Renu's businessman father, Satbeer Rathi, reacted saying, "I don't want to know what she's been through. I'm happy to have her back." The sisters were booked on an evening flight to Delhi on Monday.
