I have never actively struggled: Sarrtaj Gill

'Khap' actor Sarrtaj Gill is a true blue Mumbaikar, but says he loves spending his evenings in Dhaula Kuan when in Delhi

Love for Delhi
The actor from Mumbai says that he has many relatives in Delhi and Gurgaon, and whenever he is in the city, he loves exploring the Delhi Cantonment area and Dhaula Kuan. He says, "The greenery in Delhi does make us Mumbaikars envious. But I'd love to go for a long drive on the roads near Delhi Cantt. That's one place where I think you don't have a lot of traffic. The one thing I don't like about the city is that you don't have a lot of options for ice cream in Lutyens' Delhi. There should be options every 100 mt for people like me!"

Army to lights, camera, action
Sarrtaj is from an Army family, with many family members in the armed forces. However, he chose to join films - a decision that required a lot of convincing. He tells us, "My parents were obviously apprehensive. They wanted me to take up engineering. My sister is a doctor and doing very well abroad. My dad, my grandfather... everyone's from the Army. My great grandfather was in the British Army. I'm the only one to have broken with convention, since I've seen the Army life and it didn't excite me. I decided to join films, which I love. If I hadn't had the chance to be in front of the camera, I'd have worked behind it."

I have never struggled
Unlike most newcomers, who have tales of their struggle to share, Sarrtaj says he never had to struggle. He tells us, "I have never actively struggled. People call me, but I don't go. I am very lazy. I say I'll come and then I put my phone on silent. I am an escapist at times and I get these vibes when projects are not meant for me. No one cares about a struggler anyway, so I can ditch you and you can't do anything about it. But now that I am one film old, I can not do all this. I am more conscious of my image."

Army background helps
It's usually Army girls whose success stories are talked about, but the actor says that the Army background also helps the boys. He explains, "The Army lifestyle gives you a lot of confidence. Your life is slightly harder than the rich civilian kids with cars while you are going on your cycle. Perhaps working that little bit more makes you more responsible. And Army girls are smart. However nothing but merit can help a guy in the film industry, no matter where he comes from."
